昆虫細胞／バキュロウイルス発現系は、外来遺伝子の高発現、ヘテロ多量体タンパク質の容易な発現、安全性などの利点から、さまざまなリコンビナントタンパク質の発現に広く用いられています。昆虫細胞で発現されたタンパク質は、通常、正しい翻訳後修飾と生物学的活性を持ちます。また、昆虫細胞は懸濁培養が可能でスケールアップが容易なため、大量生産にも適しています。細胞内や核内に局在するタンパク質の発現に非常に適しており、毒性タンパク質や糖タンパク質については、分泌シグナルペプチド（例：HBM）を付加することで培地中に分泌させることも可能です。
